In 1869, a French jeweler named Charles Lewis Tiffany purchased a 287.42-carat diamond at an auction in Paris. He had the stone cut into a 128.54-carat oval brilliant, which he named the “Tiffany” diamond. In 1878, Tiffany’s chief gemologist, George Frederick Kunz, designed a necklace to showcase the diamond. The necklace, which featured 16 graduated pear-shaped diamonds, was dubbed the “L’Incomparable” diamond necklace.
It was first exhibited at the 1878 Paris World’s Fair, where it garnered rave reviews, and then put on display at Tiffany’s New York store, where it remained on view for nearly 100 years. In 1987, the necklace was sold to an anonymous buyer for a reported $5 million. The current whereabouts of the necklace are unknown but this product is worth $55 million.
