The History of Luxury Yachts – is a long and fascinating one!
Yacht building is an ancient tradition that began in ancient Egypt around 2000 BC. Early boats were built using the same techniques as used for boat building on land: by laying planks on top of one another. The Romans also developed the first water cooling system, which they used to cool the furnaces that smelted lead ingots. The first Roman ships and galleys were powered by human slaves who rowed the vessels; these early ships did not have sails, though some had awnings for shade.
The Roman writer Vitruvius recorded the techniques that were used in his time, and these were used for centuries to come. Fast forward a few thousand years, and we weren’t exactly building luxury yachts, but we were advancing our boat-making skills considerably. By the 17th century, shipwrights could build ships with three masts, which made them faster and more efficient than ever.
The use of specialized tools, such as a wooden mallet, allowed for the creation of rounder and more stable hulls. The construction of these yachts also utilized an overlapping system, which allowed for a smoother surface. By the beginning of the 17th century, luxury yachts had developed into two different types: sailing vessels, which used sails to generate power, and motorized vessels, which used propellers and engines to create motion.
By the late 19th century, luxury yachts had become a status symbol among wealthy Europeans. With the rise of industrialization and mass production techniques, these luxurious vessels became available to a larger portion of society.
Now, going back a bit…the first luxury yachts were built in Italy during the Renaissance. They were called galleasses and had a galley design inspired by ancient Roman ships. Galleasses had three or four masts, a forecastle and sterncastle, and a raised quarterdeck (called a poop deck) in the back. They could be up to 600 tons burthen, or about 10 times larger than Columbus’s ships.
In 18th century England, wealthy people such as King George III started building large pleasure yachts for private use. These yachts had two masts and could be up to 100 feet long with a crew of 30-40 men. In 1799 King George III commissioned the yacht Royal Charlotte which was 200 feet long and became his personal transport. He even slept on it while he was at sea!
The Vikings became known for their superior ship-building skills in the Middle Ages. They constructed their long boats from wood, tar and animal skins, and used them to travel from Scandinavia to England and Ireland.
In the 8th century AD, Vikings who wanted to attack Britain crossed the English Channel by boat. Viking ships were extremely sophisticated for their time and featured a clinker-built hull design that allowed them to sail in open waters across the North Atlantic Ocean, as well as up rivers.
A clinker-built hull is composed of overlapping strakes (long strips) of wood attached to a keel, which form the bottom and sides of a ship’s hull. The resulting structure was both strong and flexible, allowing it to flex and bend as waves passed under the hull. Clinker-built ships could be constructed with a minimal number of large timbers, which reduced the cost of construction. The ships were light enough to be carried over portages or on rollers and were also fitted with oars to enable them to be rowed in shallow water.
Although the details of their construction varied somewhat from ship to ship, they were built in the same way throughout Scandinavia and shared a number of similarities with other contemporary European seacraft. The only real difference was that the Norse ships had more freeboard, giving them greater speed and manoeuvrability than the ones used by other nations. This made them far better suited to the often stormy waters of the North Atlantic.
Most Viking ships were fitted with a squaresail on the main mast, a triangular sail on the front of the ship and two or more oars. They were equipped with about 20 oars per side and could carry between 50 and 100 men, depending on their size.
The Vikings used different types of ship:
- Ker: This was a small cargo vessel that could carry about 30 people. It was designed for short journeys, as it was only about 20 metres long and 4 metres wide. The keres would oftenbe used to transport people, weapons and other items.
- Knarr: This was a cargo ship that could carry about 100 people. It was about 30 metres long and 5 metres wide.
- Buss: This was a large warship that could carry about 60 men. It was about 35 metres long and 6 metres wide. Busses were equipped with a bowsprit, which meant they had two rudders instead of one. They also had reinforced sides and a forecastle. The buss was a very important ship for the Vikings.
- Dragonship: Those ships were built with reinforced sides and a forecastle. They were also equipped with an outrigger, which helped them to balance on the water. The dragonship was very important for Viking warfare, as it enabled them to travel further than any other ships of their time.

The earliest archaeological evidence of a boat comes from a cave painting in the Trois Frères Cave, Ariège, France from around 15000 BC. Yachts are expensive to buy and maintain, but there are many tax benefits associated with them. One of the most important is that you can deduct the cost of depreciation for yachts. • Corporate – the yacht is owned by a corporation (a limited liability company or a C-corporation). In this case, only one individual must pay tax on the yacht’s income. The other beneficiaries will not be taxed at all, as long as they do not receive any payments from the corporation.
Charitable remainder trusts
A charitable remainder trust (CRT) is a type of trust that provides income to the donor during his or her lifetime, and after the donor’s death, it distributes its remaining assets to a designated charity. The donation can be structured as either a charitable lead trust (CLT) or a charitable remainder annuity trust (CRAT).
A CLT is similar to an estate freeze, in which the grantor gives away some of his or her assets now and keeps others for later. A CRAT also requires the creation of a separate irrevocable trust for each beneficiary, so that if one beneficiary does not survive until the age of 65, there is still enough money to pay out to the other beneficiaries.

Limited access: Both types of trusts are not subject to creditors. As a result, they can protect your assets from judgment creditors, even if they have been obtained through fraud or theft.
No tax consequences: Because CRATs and GRATs are revocable, the assets placed in them are considered part of your estate for tax purposes. As a result, any income generated by the trust is taxed to you during your lifetime. In addition, when the assets in the trust are transferred to beneficiaries at the end of the trust term, they will be subject to estate taxes and potentially gift taxes.
