All of us are searching for the skin tanning perfection out there, but sometimes it gets very difficult when dealing with so many brands and types of products, especially when is about self tanner for face. The aim of this article is to switch on a light in our mind and help us learn all about self-tanning. From different types of tanner to how to apply, remove and most common questions about it.
Face self tanner may be the most difficult product to buy, that’s because I’m sure you want to avoid looking as a carrot, so you must choose carefully. There have been huge improvements in terms of make-up products and self tanners in the last 5-7 years. Remember those days when common girls and even celebrities used to expose with orange skin, streaks, and blotches? Well, we cannot do this anymore. Just NOT!
Ready?
Let’s start with some common types of good self tanners on the market. Once we understand them, we’ll go through how to apply/remove, and we’ll end by checking some reviews of specific brands.
There are both spray self tanner and self tanner lotions which can help you do your job better. So read carefully!
Choose wisely the type of tanner you want to use. It can be:
1. Gradual self tanner formulas:
They usually came as spray, cream, foam and even tanning gel. The process behind self tanning is actually the amino acids on your skin, which will react and create a darker surface when combined with either Erythrulose and dihydroxyacetone (DHA) – most common ingredients in these products. Gradual means that you can apply today for only one shade darker, and then, if not satisfied with it, you can keep applying for several days, until you reach the color you want.
2. Instant tanning formulas:
If you need an instant kiss from the sun and transform your white skin in a very sexy tanned one, just go for this product. They come as spray self tanner and you can apply them immediately, but you MUST be careful because you risk leaving streaks as it will darken instantly.
3. Self tanner for face formulas:
When talking about the face we should check twice the ingredients and the darkness of the product. If your type of skin is sensitive, then you should definitely look for some self tanner for sensitive skin or oily one. Some self tanner for face lotions will work perfectly for both body and face, but if you want to pay more attention to your facial skin health, you will probably want to find something designed especially for this, and for your personal type of skin.
Just keep in mind: If you have fair skin, you will go for a light to a medium color of tanner. If olive skin, then darker tanner. Got it? No more mistakes!
It is better to apply the tanner more than once to get the color you want than trying to remove it because of the dark brown or orange spots on your skin. And, of course, if you have a fair skin, you should think about buying a self tanner with spf, protecting your skin the whole day.
How to apply self tanner? A couple of self tanning tips to look gorgeous.
Applying self tanner may be difficult when dealing for the first time with such a product. You can read the “how to use self tanner” text on the back of the product, but you will never know the real process until you try it at least once. If it’s your first time experience, you better look for the easiest self tanner, which is the mousse. If you do a mistake on your legs, you can cover the with some long pants, but what if you do it on your face? Well, you should be very careful when searching for self tanner for face to buy, as to make sure you’ll look your best.
Step 1: Everything else before applying.
Meaning:
– Shaving or waxing your unwanted hair
– Manicure
– Eyebrow Shaping
– Squeezing skin or whatever. Do them BEFORE!
Step 2: Exfoliate your skin from head to toe.
No matter the type of your skin, you should not skip this step if you want the best results. Removing the first layer of the dead skin, you will make sure the tanner will work on the new and smooth skin for a perfect finish. Focus on elbows and knees because the tanner tends to get darker in these areas. Rough skin doesn’t help so make sure you exfoliate properly. For face, you can use an electric facial cleansing brush. Find here some best sellers.
Step3: Dry Off & Moisturize.
Towel off your body and wait at least 10 minutes for it to dry as much as possible. Then apply moisture around your knees, elbows, ankles, nostrils and other very dry skin areas you have. This will prevent your skin from absorbing too much product and get too dark. NOTE: make sure it is not oily based because you will ruin everything. We recommend Ultra-Lite Oil-Free Moisturizing Dew and Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion SPF 15.
Step 4: Start applying from the bottom to the top.
First, choose the right color for you! We’ve talked before. Use a tanning mitt to protect your palm from turning into an ugly orange (palms are not getting naturally tanned, so you’ll be strange if yours will be orange or brown). Squeeze a small amount of products in your hands, using circular motions to spread it to the whole skin.
Make sure you blend it well on elbows, knees and ankles, wrist, fingers, and any place you feel to insist on. Use a sponge brush to apply it on small difficult areas. Our recommendations: St. Tropez Self Tan Dark Bronzing Mousse and also Liquid Bronze Self Tanning For Face and Décollet
Step 5: Go easy and smooth on your face and neck!
You better start with those areas where you naturally tan: forehead, cheekbones, the bridge of the nose and your chin. Use only dime-size amounts of product, and be very careful around the nose and the eyes. These areas tend to be drier, so they will pick up more product. You should blend well enough. Do not forget to apply the tanner on the back of the ears and the back of the neck.
Step 6: Wash and scrub the palms of your hands if you did not use gloves.
And Wait! Wait about 15-20 minutes to dry, then 1 h undressed and at least 2 h until going to bed. The next morning make sure you take a shower, and then check if it is uniform. If not, use a lemon to clean the darker spots or add more product for the lighter ones. For a long lasting tanning, moisturize the skin daily.

What about homemade self tanner?
DIY self tanner is definitely the best and the healthiest thing. Maybe some of you use to go to tanning beds. You don’t realize the impact on your body yet, but if you keep going, you’ll see soon. So take this advice into consideration and start using a self tanner or make one at home. If searching for a safe self tanner on the market, you’ll probably get confused.
Then go wild and do it yourself. It is not such a big deal and you don’t need too many ingredients for this organic self tanner.
From my point of view, this is the best at home self tanner:
– Organic Black Tea, 8 bags; find here: Newman’S Own Black Tea 100 Ct
– 16 oz. Of filtered water
– Vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon
Boil that 16 oz of water with the vanilla, then pour it on those 8 bags of tea. Let it steep 8-10 minutes. Remove the tea bags and let it cool for 1h (you don’t want to spray boiled water on your skin). Transfer it into a spray bottle as to be easy to apply. Rub it on the whole body and let it dry then. Being a natural self tanner, you should do this 4-5 times to see the effect, but it doesn’t take more than 10 minutes to apply.

Q&A
How long does self tanner last? – You all wonder how long do self tanners last, I know, but it is actually a matter of caring here, especially when it is about self tanner for face. It depends on how much care you offer to the skin after tanning. If you moisturize it daily and use baby powder for the joints, it will definitely stay longer on your skin. Remember that it is recommended to remove it at the end of the week, carefully clean your skin and then apply again if you want to. It will look much better this way. If you choose to buy a long lasting self tanner, keep in mind that, if you’ll get any sport, it will be extremely difficult to correct them.
Are self tanners safe during pregnancy? – Yes, it is, unless you are allergic to some ingredients. Self tanning products contain dihydroxyacetone which is actually a type of sugar, turning brown when in contact with our body’s protein of the skin. Other products contain erythrulose which works the same as DHA. The only thing you should keep in mind is to buy products from a reputable supplier, which are not adding more strange ingredients, and keep the list of them transparent to the customers.
